Trail Blurbs

Fitzroy
We will be looking at Fitzroy - is there a sense of Community for everybody or do some people feel marginalised.
We will visit a breakfast club and the police station to discuss this question and get a better sense of the suburb.
Having completed a survey and some observations, we will then interview a local cafe owner to get a unique perspective on the Fitzroy community.
This will be a fun trail; i'd like to you be curious and ask lots of questions in order to get a deeper sense of fitzroy

North Carlton & Carlton
What lies beneath North Carlton's leafy streets and latte sipping locals? How have local businesses helped shape Carlton's sense of identity & strength as a community?
We will be delving into the North Carlton's history and asking ourselves and the locals what it means to live there - what they would change if they could and why...
We will also go on a discovery tour of North Carlton's past - visiting the Melbourne Cemetery and exploring how one location managed to be a prison, a mental instution and an educational environment!
Carlton will be host to some local legends, be ready to ask them big questions!
Your goal will be to build up your investigative skills and use fresh eyes to look into two local gems.

Brunswick
Our exploration of Brunswick will include the study of pre-colonisation history, the growth of this eclectic neighbouring suburb and its evolution to the present day.
The themes of history, liveability, diversity, community connectedness and sustainability will characterise the day.
Our trail will include visits to Clifton and Gilpin Parks, Westwyck Eco Village, the Brickworks housing development, Sydney Road and the Brunswick Baths.

Term 4 2013

Week One Trails

Brunswick
This term, we'll spend most of our time heading South from Parkville into the CBD. Before we do however, let's spend a trail heading the other way. To Brunswick. We'll practice being invesigators and observers of our world. What can we tell about Brunswick by doing a trail there? Is wandering around enough, or do we need to be more active participants to get a better grip on what's going on?

Fitzroy

We will be looking at the Fitzroy Community from a number of perspectives: Observation, surveying, interviewing experts and library based research. We will look at a fundamental question and try to answer it, using these various methods of data gathering.
By the end of the day we should have a better idea about gathering information and measuring the quality of the evidence we have gathered.
It will be fun, it will be challenging and i'm excited to get out into the community!

North Carlton

What lies beneath North Carlton's leafy streets and latte sipping locals?
We will be delving into the area's history and asking ourselves and the locals what it means to live in North Carlton - what they would change if they could and why...
We are also going to go on a discovery tour of North Carlton's past - visiting the Melbourne Cemetery and exploring how one location managed to be a prison, a mental instution and an educational environment! Get ready to ask the local historian some big questions :)
Your goal will be to build up your investigative skills and use fresh eyes to look into a local gem.

End of the line trails!

Sandringham

What is life like in the bay-side suburb of Sandringham? Do the benefits of living along the coast outweigh the distance that residents have to travel to access the CBD, cultural and sporting events? Is it all fish & chips and lifesaving or are there other reasons for people to venture out to the end of the train line?

This week, we will be using our surveying, observation, data crunching and map reading skills as we explore life in the outer suburb of Sandringham :)

Hurstbridge

MEET AT 8.45am AT FLAGSTAFF GARDENS!!

We'll be heading out to one of Melbourne's outer ring communities, Hurstbridge. Unlike many other outer ring suburbs, Hurstbridge isn't new. It's been around a long time, and a community has built up - some might even call it a village. We'll be investigating what makes it unique and distinctive. We'll visit the local gardens, the local historical society, walk a bit of the heritage trail and have a BBQ!

Inner City Living

Is it possible to have a sense of community when you live in the inner city? How has Docklands tried to create a vibrant neighbourhood for its residents? Can the CBD successfully be home to a combination of business, politics and people? We will be exploring Docklands and the CBD in an effort to try to answer these questions [and a few more!]

  • We will need at least 4 people with i-phones who can download a QR Reader!!*

North Melbourne

We all know that Melbourne is a "multicultural" place; but how, when and why did people come here from different parts of the world? We'll use the ultra-modern learning environment at the North Melbourne Huddle to consider these questions, as well as participating in some fun physical activity. But why would a football club spend millions of dollars providing free educational programs to locals? What other services does North Melbourne provide to support its communities? Exploring North Melbourne in the afternoon will give us a chance to gather different types of field evidence and practice our question-asking skills.

Equipment required: appropriate clothes and footwear and clothes for sport (change-rooms are available at the Huddle)

North Melbourne Trail Homework tasks - Answer using evidence from Galileo:

Use the ideas from Monday's "What is Community?" Class and evidence from Wednesday's trail to answer these questions.

  1. Describe three different communities that live, work or spend time in North Melbourne. Is North Melbourne a "multicultural" place?
  2. Is North Melbourne a liveable place? Is it equally liveable for all the communities that use it?
